Return of the Productor
OR one of my TikTok clients just dropped a new song I worked on, scroll to the bottom to find the link without the yapping <3
Oh hey! Didn’t see you there. Apologies for taking forever since my last email. Writing emails is much like writing songs, in that if I wait too long between writing them, I fully forget how. Actually I’m convinced that I never knew how, and I just persuaded the world to ignore this fact.
That’s why I’m trying to write more emails! Every day I am reminded that social media prevents friends and followers alike from seeing my new music and hearing about new clients, shows, etc. And I know I’m behind. So watch out for more…
Anyway, I looked back through some emails to remember what I ever had to say, if anything, and thought back to last year when I invented the phrase “productor”. Combination of producer and instructor, I guess? It’s been over a year and a half since my Jeremy Pivot (for those just joining us, that was when I got unceremoniously laid off along with 200 of my colleagues in favor of outsourced labor from India then pivoted to music production full time, etc) and I have now been able to put this idea into practice quite a bit…
A little recap: My basic philosophy as a producer is that when a musician comes to me for help producing a piece of music, their vision is paramount. My role is to facilitate it, and if they’d like, help them to get closer to that place themselves. Here’s an example:
Earlier this year, I got a DM request on TikTok (lol) from a very cool comedian slash artist named Campbell Dukes, who’d been enjoying my music and wanted to work with me. I didn’t totally know what to expect, but it turned out that they also use Ableton and had written around a minute of a dance-y hyperpop song called Prednisone. It was right up my alley to produce out the rest of the song with them and engineer their vocals.
Campbell took such diligent notes of everything I was doing and it was really satisfying to watch them learning things in real time that took me 10+ years to get to myself. When you don’t gate keep your methods, the instincts of musicians who are new to the process allow for lateral and crazy new ideas… Isn’t that the point???
And it came out today! Listen to Prednisone here. Or here if you use Apple Music.
OK see you soon!
