LT2 is here
The second transmission from everyone's favorite cross-California inter genre duo
When people listen to the music, get confused, and ask me what exactly Left Tracks (my project with Oakland’s DI LEO) is ‘going for’, I just say to think of a fusion of Animal Collective and Steely Dan. We like to experiment with sound itself while using many years of harmony as structural architecture. The tracks were left, we’re just picking them up.
But it’s so much more too. We play each other’s songs. We come together pretty often from different ends of California to write music with no center of genre. We’re over-ambitious and community-oriented and monomaniacal. And sometimes we make a record.
Which is just to say that LT2, the new mini-album/EP/whatever you wanna call it by Left Tracks is out now. Produced by us, mixed by us and mastered by Nick Dussault. Featuring saxophone stylings, on a couple songs, by Geoff Saba aka Forest Floor. Buy it on Bandcamp here. Or stream it anywhere else here.
For a 16 minute album that we broke ground on in 2023, it took us way too long to do this. But that makes sense… One of us got married in between the sessions. Another of us got laid off. We each individually hosted a music retreat. We each finished another album. We’ve each toured nationally with other artists, and together as Left Tracks we toured California twice. But now it’s finally done.
It’s ironic because the album is about rest. Literally — the first line is ‘rest is a discipline’. It’s a lesson we’re still learning each time we get together. Music and creativity are intoxicating, can fill our minds with stars and take over every second. But we need our bodies to interface with those things, and it’s important to take care of them. Which might be a good lens to think about the songs as you listen.
Oh, and here’s an article / Q&A we did with Moths and Giraffes about the album. Teri was so kind and asked really insightful questions :)
Till next time, thanks for listening :)
